Chenloi
“Penarok pensol besenwej ru peinoi poi”. (Semai language)
Alunan Pensol mendayu-dayu, mengiringi hebusan angin.
The sound of Pensol swaying, with the accompanying of the wind.
“Chenloi” is a new work premiering at YSDAF 2023, the result of an exciting collaboration between three different artistes – Pensol (nose flute) player Bah Raman, dancer / choreographer Yeow Lai Chee of Soubi Sha and sape’ player Shawn Finian Wong.
The trio met at the A.S.L.I campaign 2023, a campaign organised by Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) to create awareness on a safe home for the Orang Asli and the importance of preserving the culture and heritage, where each performed individually in the piece called “Tanah Ku, Ungkapan Ku”.
Their friendship blossomed and “Chenloi” will mark their first collaboration together. It will be a chance for audiences to hear the music of the Orang Asli and Orang Asal. Chenloi is also an exploration between three artistes of different backgrounds and from different generations – Bah Rahman who lives in the forest, Lai Chee who lives in KL and Shawn, a young man from Sarawak. What do they share in common? How can they create together?
