“Our visitors will experience different forms of stimulations via feeling (prompted by the experience), touching (interaction with the alternative museum features), smelling, hearing & seeing. The central theme of the displays & installations is art & culture. Other stimulants are categorised into Science, Architecture, Nature, Music/Sound & Sense (in a random sequence).”
What is Pitch Start?
Pitch Start is platform we created in 2014 for artistes or art groups to submit their creative and original ideas. Winners not only receive funding to bring their ideas to fruition but have the chance to premiere it at the festival finale attended by the public. This is in the hope that it helps to showcase their talent and open doors to provide opportunities for others to appreciate their works. Every artiste has to start creating their idea from somewhere, and grants to fund artistic ideas are hard to come by, hence this platform was created as part of the YSD Arts Festival. This 2018 marks the second run of the Pitch Start.
This year, our Festival is themed “You, Me + The Arts”, which explores how the arts relate to people and vice versa. We were looking for ideas for an alternative to a traditional museum that is catered for the visually-impaired and / or hearing- impaired. Ideas were welcomed in various forms, including a touchable museum, multi-sensory experience or installation.
When did Pitch Start happen?
We opened for applications early this year and closed our submission ideas on 15 March. Individuals and groups whose project ideas were shortlisted were then invited to a Live Pitch session at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) on 28 March.
So… Who won?
The winner of this year’s Pitch Start competition is Chin Wen Yen, who is the founder of Cae House Model, an architectural scale model-making company. Her idea features a touchable museum which provides a multi-sensory experience, as well as an installation. Yen was awarded with a grant of maximum RM20,000 to bring this idea to life.
