Meet the Maker

Mathew Ngau Jau, is a 66 year old Kenyah Ngorek, a Bornean indigenous ethnic group from Long Semiyang in Sarawak, Malaysia. He is a professional Sape’ performer, maker and teacher and is one of the few community-recognised authority on the instrument. To his community, he’s endearingly known as “the Keeper of the Kenyah Ngorek Songs”.

Mathew is managed by The Tuyang Initiative, a social enterprise whose focus is in the economic and skill uplifting of Dayak (Bornean indigenous) communities. They work on inclusive and innovative indigenous cultural-related products & services.

What is a Sape’?

The Sape’ is a long lute-like stringed instrument made from a single bole of wood. It is hollowed out and decorated with elaborate traditional cultural motifs. Originally a two-stringed instrument, it was used for healing rites and celebrations. Today, it is celebrated for its enchanting sounds and melodies, embodying the universal spirit of nature and humanity.

How can I buy Mathew’s handcrafted Sape’?

Easy! Just head over to Mathew’s online store to purchase your very own Sape’.

While you are required to fill in a billing address, each purchased Sape’ must be self-collected from klpac on 18 – 19 August 2018.

With every Sape’ purchased, you will also receive an exclusively handcrafted tree bark painting by Mathew himself. This promotion ends on 20 July 2018.

How and where do I collect my purchased Sape’?

A self-collection counter under the Tuyang Initiative will be set up at The Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival at klpac, between 11AM – 8PM, on 18 – 19 August 2018.
