Pitch Start: A Synesthetic Symphony: The Art of Sound and Sight
PARC
12.00 pm - 1.00 pm
Main Stage
Winner of the YSDAF 2025 Pitch Start grant aimed at engaging Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through the arts.
The Synesthetic Symphony of Sound & Sight (4S) is more than just an inclusive artistic programme—it is a transformational initiative that empowers marginalised communities through creative expression. By bringing together blind artists, marginalised and special needs children, and the wider community, 4S breaks societal barriers and proves that art is a universal language of hope, inclusion, and empowerment.
This work explores the connection between art, tactile and sound sensation by creating a sensory-driven experience where the blind artists create abstract art while a live music performance unfolds in the background, exploring synesthesia in the visually impaired.
The performance will focus on blindness as a means of enhanced others sensory perception. It explores how the absence of sight can lead to unique artistic expressions. The combination of blind art and music evokes a powerful emotional interpretation response.
Highlights include:
- Show how art can be deeply influenced by sound, rhythm and emotional atmosphere.
- Understand how the visually impaired person experiencing the synesthesia
- Creating the multisensory level art, focusing on sound, touch, and emotional response.
Their premiere at the Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival 2025 (YSDAF) marks the beginning of a lasting impact, paving the way for long-term change. With the right support, 4S can evolve into a sustainable and scalable model for inclusive arts, one that can be replicated and expanded to uplift other communities.
About the Artiste / Group
The Synesthetic Symphony of Sound & Sight (4S) is deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible arts ecosystem, where everyone—regardless of ability or background—has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully. 4S is a testament to their passion for empowering communities, using the arts as a powerful tool for change, healing, and unity.
Programme Objectives:
1. To foster inclusive artistic expression by engaging participants of diverse abilities, including those with sensory differences, in the co-creation of artworks that blend sound and visual elements.
2. To explore and enhance cross-sensory creativity through synesthetic-inspired workshops that integrate sound (music, rhythm, voice) with visual arts (painting, digital visuals, movement-based art).
3. To promote awareness and empathy towards neurodiverse and sensory-divergent communities by facilitating collaborative art-making that challenges traditional sensory boundaries.
4. To encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among visual artists, musicians, performers, and participants from the community in developing a multisensory performance or installation.
5. To provide an accessible platform for community storytelling, where personal narratives, cultural expressions, and emotional experiences are translated through the synergy of sound and sight.
6. To document and disseminate the creative processes and outcomes through a public showcase, audio-visual documentation, and interactive exhibitions that highlight the power of sensory integration in the arts.
